Training of Trainers Programme for National Key Stakeholders of the IAS Project Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment (MoMD&E) is implementing Strengthening capacity to control the introduction and spread of invasive alien species in Sri Lanka project with the support of GEF/UNDP.

This project will support establishment of comprehensive regulatory framework, integrated institutional mechanism and cost effective control mechanisms on IAS control and management methods in Sri Lanka.

One of the key components of the project is Training and Awareness Programme related to IAS control and management. The main objective of the programme is to develop capacities of relevant government agencies, local organizations, CBO€™s and communities to effectively engage in IAS detection, control, management and education process at the national, provincial and local level.

The project plans to conduct following training programme for National Stakeholders on 19th and 20th at SLIDA, Colombo as two day residential programme.

National level TOT programme

National Level €“ TOT programme on IAS Control and Management for key stakeholders.

Target Group

Mainly 15 agencies related to IAS control and Management - Mahaweli Authority, Forest Department, Wild Life Department , Marine Pollution Prevention Authority, Agriculture Department, Wild Life Department, Sri Lanka Customs, Fisheries, Irrigation, Botanical Gardens Department, Tourism and selected Environmental NGO€™s. Training and awareness requirements of each agency will be identified at the National Coordination Committee Meeting. Officers attached to training units of each institution and technical officers at the national level will be invited for this programme.

Resource persons and training modules

This programme will be conducted by BDS staff , IUCN Trainers and selected resource persons from National Invasive Species Specialist Group . Training modules developed by the project will be used for this purpose


Expected Outcomes of the TOT programme

At the end of the training, trainees will be able to gain the knowledge and skills to conduct training and awareness programmes on IAS identification, control and management. A training plan for each of the institution will be developed by the participant. Using the awareness package (training modules, materials and financial support) given by the project, each institution will be able to conduct awareness programmes to respective audiences. BDS officers and training consultants from the project team will be involved in monitoring the programmes.
