Development of Sustainable Human Development Index (SHDI)

Among the number of Human Development Indexes in the world, Human Development Index (HDI) developed by UNDP is provided a better assessment of human wellbeing. However, HDI also ignores the distributional aspects of income, the quality of life of human beings and the detrimental impacts on the environment with the rapid economic development.
The Sustainable Development Division of the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy developed a Sustainable Human Development Index (SHDI) in 2008 by incorporating environmental aspects and quality of the life such as carbon emission, bio capacity, ecological footprint and poverty to Human Development Index (HDI) developed by UNDP to consider the sustainable human development aspects which ignore in HDI.
Sustainable Human Development Index (SHDI)

SHDI = ΒΌ(HDI +Ecological Index-Climate Change Index +Poverty Index)

Later on it was recognized that the population growth is highly affected to the sustainable human development of a country. Therefore, SHDI has to be modified by adjusting population increase dimension to be the index more realistic.

Modified Sustainable Human Development Index = SHDI – Population Growth Rate Index

This modification was presented to the experts of the relevant field to get comments for finalization on 20th July 2011 at the conference hall of the Ministry.
